Oklahoma Spring Storm Season: Home Prep Checklist

By BoomTownTrades LLC - An Oklahoma Based LLCUpdated 2 min read

Oklahoma's peak severe-weather season usually runs from March through June, with hail, damaging winds, flash flooding, and tornadoes. A few hours of prep can prevent thousands in damage.

Before the season (February–March)

Roof & exterior

  • Have your roof inspected — look for loose, curled, or missing shingles
  • Clean gutters and downspouts; extend downspouts away from the foundation
  • Trim tree limbs that overhang the roof
  • Secure or plan to store patio furniture, grills, and trampolines (anchor kits help)
  • Check fences and gates for loose posts
  • Inspect garage door — older doors are a weak point in high wind

Safety

  • Know your shelter plan (storm shelter, safe room, or interior room on the lowest floor) → Storm shelter guide
  • Assemble a kit: water, flashlight, batteries, phone chargers, shoes, helmets, medications, pet supplies
  • Enable weather alerts on your phone and have a backup (NOAA weather radio)
  • Register your shelter so first responders know to check it after a storm (Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Cleveland County — which covers Norman and Moore — all run online shelter registries)

Insurance & documents

  • Review your homeowners policy: wind/hail deductible, ACV vs. replacement cost
  • Take a home inventory video — every room, closets, garage, roof, exterior
  • Save policy documents and photos in the cloud

During a storm warning

  • Park cars in the garage if you can
  • Close blinds/curtains to reduce flying glass
  • Go to your shelter early — don't wait to see it

Right after the storm

  1. Safety first: watch for downed power lines and gas smells.
  2. Document damage with photos and video — gutters, AC fins, siding, windows, roof (from the ground).
  3. Prevent further damage: tarp leaks, board broken windows; keep receipts.
  4. Call your insurer and get a claim number. → Hail claim guide
  5. Be careful who you hire. → How to spot storm chasers
